Bob’s earliest productions as director of the Butoh group Flesh & Blood Mystery Theater were a series of performances tracing the history of esoteric western spiritual traditions, exploring themes such as the imagery of the Tarot, the legend of Parzival, Gnostic scripture, and Greek myths.

After this, in an search for even deeper authenticity on stage, Bob began a series of experimental, site-specific solo performances, exploring the presence of the body in public ritual, eventually, developing an art of pure improvisation.

When he returned to directing a group, Bob continued this emphasis on pure improvisation, crafting a new style of performance that allowed small intimate groups to improvise in a way authentic to the moment as well as exciting and meaningful for an audience.

In his most recent performances, Bob has focused on dance as the free interaction of contrasting energies, with a focus on improvisation from a state of non-intention.
